Open Farm Day 2014

This year, we went to the valley again for Open Farm Day. We started at Gates U-Pick and went for a short wagon ride and learned a bit about apples. We stopped in the orchard and picked some very yummy apples and pears and the wagon picked us up and took us back to the beginning. We also bought a good sized pumpkin, which was very reasonably priced, and some homemade chocolate fudge. Yum!

At our next stop, when we pulled in, we were told there was a fee to enter the farm and get a bracelet for the activities. We were all travelling with several children, and the cost really wasn’t worth it when there are so many other farms that do not charge an entry fee. In my opinion, farms should not be charging an entry fee on Open Farm Day. It really defeats the purpose, and for us, deterred us from visiting their farm.

We then headed to Wild Mountain Farm in search of farm animals, and most importantly, wee baby piglets.  Unfortunately, mama pig was still preggers so no babies to be seen. They did have chicks, geese, pigs, horses, and sheep. They also had a barbeque with burgers made from their own meat, and they were also selling meat to take home. The cows were in another pasture and they were taking visitors in their van to see them. This farm was a smaller family farm and we had a nice visit there.

Next up was VanOostrum Farm, which had mainly cows, a couple of donkeys, and some sheep.  The barn was really long and open so we could look in, feed some cows, and pet the donkey. We could not enter the barn. We didn’t stay there very long because….how long can you stand and look at cows? Also, the smell was pretty bad and the kids were holding their noses. It wasn’t hard to tell they weren’t farm kids!

Most of the farms close between 2pm and 4pm. As it was getting late in the day, we ran out of time to visit anymore farms. I really wanted to visit Taproot Farms but they closed at 3pm. So they are on our list for next year!

Last stop was to Foxhill Cheese for some ice cream. Did I mention the weather? It was sunny and 27C….definately an ice cream day! As always, it was delish and the kids may or may not have gone a bit crazy at the sample cheese tray. Oops.

All in all, it was an absolutely fantastic day. 4 adults, 6 kids, 3 farms, lots of driving, and ice cream to finish it off. We all slept like babies that night!

Looking forward to doing it all again next year!   For more information, visit their website at http://www.meetyourfarmer.ca

Scenic Hubbards Drive

I found myself in Hubbards last week for a work appointment. It was a beautiful day so on the way back, I avoided the highway and drove back on the old Hwy 3. It’s such a nice drive along the ocean with pretty houses, bouys & boats  in the water, and colourful Adirondack chairs neatly arranged on lawns. There were plenty of shops to stop at but due to my time constraints,  I was not able to stop that day. I plan to take a scenic drive all along the #3 someday soon when I have more time to stop.
Watch for that future post!
Til then,  Happy Fall!
